Project Updates 10/7/25 (Reposted from Tumblr)
I haven’t done a project update post in …. 2 MONTHS?! Whoopsie.
Here’s what I’ve been up to:
- My Linux Surface Project was a BUST … but here’s what I learned: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THAT THERE’S TWO TYPES OF WINDOWS SURFACE PROS THAT WERE RELEASED. After HOURS of researching between both me and my dad (thank you dad for being so knowledgeable and willing to help me) we found that, yes, there are Linux ARMS made specifically for the Windows Surface generation, but not for Windows Surface 2. Which is what I have.
Now how were we supposed to know that. But before we came to this conclusion, here’s some other things I learned from this project: 1) Lots of command line practice while updating firmware, rebooting, changing files, etc. 2) How to flash a USB (and make sure your USB has way more storage than you need) 3) There are not always Linux ARMS for every device ever created … 4) WINDOWS 8 SUCKS. 4.1) SOMETIMES WINDOWS JUST DOESN’T HAVE BIOS ENABLED APPARENTLY!?!?! (I hope you can clearly tell this was the most frustrating and time consuming part of this process.) It took us most of this project just to ENABLE BIOS on the computer. (We did end up getting it to work though.) All in all, it was disappointing to say the least but I did get some good life lessons out of it. (Lessons in patience and remembering to do extensive research about your device.)
- My Surface Pro ((2)) was going to be my main Linux practice hub if you will, but since that is no longer happening, I’m just going to be putting it on a Dell. That’s the project. I’m trying to decide what distro I want to use however. Since I am a cyber security major, I’m looking for a distro that comes with a lot of security features. Some distros I’ve been looking at are Kali Linux, BackBox Linux, or Arch (ofc). LMK if you all have any suggestions for distros for me to play around with!
mini projects!!!:
- Making a security key with my Flipper Zero! Some laptops I have access to (specifically the Dell) have physical security key features, therefore, I’d like to create/replicate one onto my Flipper Zero to be able to open my laptop.
- Making a keylogger with my Flipper Zero. Easy-peasy, just run a BadUSB (specifically on the Dell) and track key strokes!
- Run other BadUSB from my Flipper Zero (I’m going to brick my Dell).
Future Projects:
- After all of that is said and done, I’d like to use the Dell as a Linux server to host all of my stuff. It’s going to just be a cool Linux Desktop for me to rice and practice on, but I’d like it to have some functionality too. I already have Ubuntu dual booted on 2 of my devices, so I really don’t need ANOTHER laptop just to play with Linux on (but it’s nice to have).
My last little note is that I’d like to say I am so grateful and blessed to be able to have the opportunities and access to technology that I do. I recognize that I am extremely privileged to be in the position I’m in and to be able to just have multiple devices to play with and learn on. I am so grateful to my dad for helping me and pushing me to learn and play and make mistakes with these devices.
Thanks for listening to me crash out over this Linux project! Best of luck to you and your projects! <3
Interesting read! The focus on community in modern gaming is key – seeing platforms like aron play build that social aspect alongside security is smart. It’s about more than just winning, right?
